The typical Viking sword of the 9th and 10th centuries featured a long wide blade with a broad central fuller and two keen edges. The preferred stroke was a hard slash or chopping blow, so the point was fairly rounded but was just acute enough to be useful for thrusting. A simple guard with forward curving quillions was often utilized and combined with an equally utilitarian wooden handle that was covered with leather, bone, or even cast in brass. What really made the Viking Sword so distinctively recognizable from its contemporaries was its heavy 5 lobed pommel used to balance the long blade.
·Hand forged 1055 carbon steel, double-edged blade
·Hand polished to a brilliant lustre
·Leather covered wood handle
·Simple, yet elegant, steel guard and 5 lobed pommel
·Both guard and pommel feature traditional Celtic knot embellishments
·30-1/4" blade
·36-7/8" overall

The Norman lust for battle and ravenous desire for land and treasure can, like their famous sword be undoubtedly traced to their Viking forefathers who wrenched their homeland in northwestern France from the hands of Charles the Simple in the Treaty of Saint-Clair-sur-Epte in 911 AD. Never satisfied with thier lot, it wasn't long before they once again took up their broad, double-edged swords and set sail across the English Channel to conquer Britian most famously, at the battle of Hastings in 1066 AD. Now Cold Steel is pleased to offer you their battle ready version of this famous sword.

For over a century, most of the Western world has remained convinced that a point-oriented, thrusting sword is superior to an edge-oriented cutting sword. There are, however, a series of books by D.A. Kinsley that cast a skeptical light on this running debate. Kinsley recounts numerous incidents (collected form battlefields throughout the British Empire) where cutting swords proved equal, if not superior, to thrusting swords in deciding the outcome of a skirmish. Lynn C. Thompson was encouraged by Mr. Kinsley's ideas and after considering all the evidence decided to produce one of the best cutting swords ever devised: The Indian Talwar. Taking a cue from the most experienced Indian Swordsmen of the past, and the Pindari chief of old, Amir Khan, Lynn has combined a strongly curved British Light Cavalry blade with its distinctive hatchet point (wider near the tip than the forté) with a traditionally styled Indian hilt.

Named for the feared 8th century Viking raider, Hanwei's Godfred Sword is built around a beautifully patterned folded steel blade to replicate the pre-9th century originals. The interwoven leather grip, complemented by a Damascus guard and pommel, is matched by the leather-covered wood scabbard with bronze detailing and integral belt hooks. Superbly balanced, due to the deeply fullered distal tapered blade profile, the Godfred is a true tribute to the legendary Norse smiths.
